Tone Specific Pickups: Which Set For My Stratocaster?

Messages: That is cool, I hadn't heard of these before. Be sure to post how they sound. What Strat are you going to put them in?

I have a set of Klein No. With the guitar tuned to Eb and heavy strings it really had the SRV tone going on.

Are Slider's 59 SRV pickups versatile?

The leads are untrimmed, so plenty of wire for whatever your install is. Throughout this period Strat pickups were built from similar materials and to the same basic specification. Observed variations with original sets was mainly due to the different batches of AlNiCo, Formvar wire and most importantly, the individual operator that actually hand built the particular set. Magnetic polarity went to South and the averaged resistance was in the 5. Forgetting the SRV name, these are a classic vintage correct and voiced pickup set, as were Stevie's, warm, sweet with max detail and ability to really drive that amp!

One cover had a small crack at the mounting hole that has been repaired. International buyers please write for shipping. Condition Excellent Used.

EBGBJan 25, Fender Stratocaster Guitar Forum. Messages: Hey guys! I love the guitar, but the pickups are just a little too weak for me. Thanks in advance! BigWilson87Aug 25, Messages: 6, SRV used regular ol' medium-output single-coils to great effect.

I'd keep your strat just as it is and get a second inexpensive guitar with humbuckers. Messages: 2, I really don't get the "weak" pickups thing. So many people are hunting for the so-called "SRV tone" with hotter and hotter pickups not helped by the fact that several manufacturers market "hot" single coils with "Texas" or "Blues" in the name, when the reality is that SRV primarily used a set of '59 pickups that were about the same output as the Classic Series ones in your Strat right now.

If you want to swap pickups, go for it. But you say you're on a budget, which I can totally relate to. This is going to seem counterintuitive, but here's what I would suggest: -Keep the Classic Series pickups for now. You may actually find they sound better a little lower than this, although the "nickel" method is a good starting place.

The Classic Series pickups are, IMO, a pretty competent and underrated set of pickups that can keep up with "vintage-style" pickups that cost a lot more. VentilatorBluesAug 25, Age: 42 Messages: I agree with the Low Output side her, low by modern standards anyway. Some early Strat's had less output and still sound great. You mentioned your budget, and yes a lot of custom makers ask a lot for a custom set of pickups, but most also offer a sponsorship program. The first two secrets to Stevie's tone are his soul and hands, so you are defeated before you begin in your quest for his tone.

I am not a gear nut, and some of what is on this page I don't understand. My effort has been to focus on gear used from While Stevie used dozens of other guitars and pieces of equipment, this page is not meant to be a complete history of his gear.

He also had maple neck Strat during his high school years, but it gave him a lot of trouble, and he mainly used the other guitars until he got Number One.
